Dr. Marta Helliesen began practicing psychotherapy in New York City in the early 1990’s and has since developed her expertise in sexology and sex therapy. She has a Ph.D. in Arts and Sciences with a specialization in Sexology.

Dr. Helliesen approaches sexuality from a comprehensive perspective and has developed unique interdisciplinary treatment modalities for sexual problems, based on Gestalt therapy, neurobiological theories, and breath and body awareness.

Dr. Helliesen is originally from Norway where she earned a B.S in Biology and an M.S. in Physiology at the University of Bergen. She emigrated to the U.S. as a research fellow in neuroscience for the Norwegian Research Council at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Helliesen relocated to New York City and trained as a Gestalt therapist at the Gestalt Center for Psychotherapy and Training. She is also a Licensed Massage Therapist and a former faculty member of the Swedish Institute - School of Massage Therapy. She has taught a number of workshops and seminars on sexual health and pleasure and on sexual obstacles, and has been featured several times on the Canadian Discovery Channel.

Dr. Helliesen has Diplomate Status in the American Psychotherapy Association, is a member of The Society for Scientific Study of Sexuality; The Society for Sex Therapy and Research; The American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists; The International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health; The New York Academy of Science and The New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy.


She continues to write and teach about sex while maintaining a private practice as a sex therapist and consultant in New York City.
